About

“The greater the obstacle,
the more glory in overcoming it"

—Molière

Hi. I’m Chris Hinds, and I’ve been practicing psychotherapy for 37 years.

My private practice is located in southern Vermont, where I help individuals, couples, teens, and families handle the problems they can’t resolve by themselves.

Whether these problems concern relationships or parenting issues;  life transitions such as divorce, loss of a loved one or a job; child or adolescent crises; or more general conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, serious substance abuse or complex mental health/behavioral issues, one thing becomes clear—something needs to change for the better.

My private practice is the culmination of nearly four decades of leadership in the psychotherapy field.

I am a firm but sensitive therapist who is committed to my clients. I find that people trust me easily because of my straightforward and direct approach, my intuitive capacity and my interpersonal sensitivity to all people, regardless of background. I believe in a client-centered, collaborative approach in working with you.

Background

I am a Boston University-trained Clinical (Psychiatric) Social Worker with advanced Clinical and Family Therapy training from the Yale University School of Medicine, where I worked as Family Therapist for the Yale Psychiatric Institute, a pre-eminent teaching and research hospital. I am also former Clinical Director of five accredited Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse Treatment Programs, receiving high levels of accreditation for demonstrated quality of care.

Programs I have directed, and cases that I have supervised have been featured prominently on CNN Presents, The Dr. Phil Show and many other media outlets. I was Assistant Adjunct Professor for the Columbia University School of Social Work and for Southern Connecticut State University, supervising therapists from seven different colleges and universities over a ten-year period. As a leader in the design and development of Behavioral Health programs, I have provided direct treatment to thousands of clients (adults, adolescents, families) and have led interdisciplinary treatment teams of mental health and addiction professionals throughout the Northeast and Southeast.

My career as a psychotherapist and executive has been enriched by diverse experiences with court psychiatric and outpatient clinics, psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment programs, schools, county jails, private psychiatric practice, and outdoor behavioral health (wilderness) treatment programs in the Pisgah National Forest of North Carolina.
